What is Renewable Energy?
To mark International Renewable Energy Day we thought we would share more about what renewable energy is and both the environmental and commercial benefits for businesses in the construction sector.
Renewable energy is derived from natural sources that are replenished on a human timescale. Unlike fossil fuels, which are finite and deplete over time, renewable energy sources are sustainable and have minimal environmental impact. These energy sources harness natural processes to generate power, making them a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to traditional energy sources.
Renewable energy is becoming increasingly popular in the construction sector. We see from our own clients that they prioritising greener, low-carbon materials and energy-efficient designs to address climate challenges. This growing trend reflects the industry's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendly practices.
Types of Renewable Energy
There are several types of renewable energy, each with unique characteristics and methods of generation:
- Solar Energy: This type of energy is harnessed from the sun using solar panels. Solar energy can be used to generate electricity or heat. It's one of the most abundant and accessible forms of renewable energy.
- Wind Energy: Wind turbines capture the kinetic energy of wind and convert it into electricity. Wind energy is particularly effective in areas with strong, consistent winds.
- Hydropower: Also known as hydroelectric power, this energy is generated by the movement of water, typically through dams on large rivers. The flow of water spins turbines to produce electricity.
- Geothermal Energy: This type of energy is derived from the heat stored beneath the Earth's surface. Geothermal power plants convert this heat into electricity or use it directly for heating.
- Biomass Energy: Biomass energy comes from organic materials such as plants, wood, and waste. These materials are burned or converted into biofuels to produce energy.

Why Renewable Energy is Better for the Environment
Renewable energy offers numerous environmental benefits compared to fossil fuels including:
- Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Perhaps the obvious one but, renewable energy sources produce little to no greenhouse gases during operation. This helps mitigate climate change by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide and other harmful emissions released into the atmosphere. This helps support your businesses Net Zero goals.
- Lower Air Pollution: Unlike fossil fuels, renewable energy sources do not emit pollutants that contribute to smog, acid rain, and respiratory problems. This leads to cleaner air and improved public health.
- Sustainable Resource Use: Renewable energy sources are naturally replenished and do not deplete over time. This ensures a sustainable supply of energy over a longer period of time.
- Reduced Water Usage: Many renewable energy technologies, such as wind and solar, require minimal water for operation, unlike fossil fuel power plants that consume large amounts of water for cooling.
- Biodiversity Protection: By reducing the need for mining and drilling, renewable energy helps protect natural habitats and biodiversity.

The Commercial Benefits of Renewable Energy for Construction Companies
All these benefits are great, but I’m sure as a business you are wondering if there is any commercial benefits, the answer is yes!
As the world moves towards sustainable practices, construction firms that use renewable energy not only help protect the environment but gain significant business benefits. These advantages include cost savings, better brand reputation, increased competitiveness, and compliance with new regulations.
1. Enhancing Competitiveness in Tenders
One of the most significant benefits of renewable energy for construction companies is the competitive edge it provides in winning tenders. In the UK, PPN 06/21 requires organisations tendering for government contracts to present a carbon reduction plan as part of those proposals. By demonstrating a commitment to renewable energy, construction companies can meet these criteria and improve their chances of securing contracts.
2. Reducing Operational Costs
Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, can lead to substantial savings on energy bills for construction companies. By generating their own power, these companies can significantly reduce their reliance on traditional energy sources, which are often subject to price volatility and market fluctuations. This shift towards self-sufficiency in energy production not only provides a more predictable and stable cost structure but also shields companies from the financial uncertainties associated with fluctuating energy prices.
3. Future-Proofing Against Regulations
Governments worldwide are implementing stricter sustainability regulations such as CSRD or UK SRS. By transitioning to renewable energy, construction companies can stay ahead of these regulations, avoiding potential fines and ensuring compliance. This proactive approach can also position them as industry leaders in sustainability.
4. Attracting Investment and Financing
Investors and financial institutions are increasingly considering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria when making decisions. Companies that prioritise renewable energy are more likely to attract investment and secure favorable financing terms. This can provide the necessary capital for growth and innovation.
5. Improving Employee Morale and Retention
Employees are more likely to feel proud and motivated working for a company that values sustainability. By adopting renewable energy, construction companies can boost employee morale, leading to higher retention rates and attracting top talent who share the same values.
The shift towards renewable energy offers numerous commercial benefits for construction companies. From winning tenders to reducing operational costs and enhancing reputation, the advantages are clear. As we celebrate International Clean Energy Day, let's recognise the pivotal role that renewable energy can play in transforming the construction industry for the better.
