Background
Danderhall is a state-of-the-art, two storey building comprising a primary school, nursery spaces, a library, leisure centre, café and sports pitches. This £16m project for Midlothian Council, involved the demolition of the existing school, completion of all associated external works and off-site road works.
How was SustainIQ used?
- To track local procurement of subcontractors and suppliers of products and materials;
- To monitor the use of FSC/PEFC timber and recycled products/products made from recycled content;
- For all aspects of environmental management including waste, energy, water, carbon emissions generated through deliveries and business transport and biodiversity;
- To track apprenticeship and placement opportunities created by the project;
- To measure the impact of the diversity initiatives delivered in tandem with the project;
- To monitor the 10 community, one volunteering and 11 school engagements that took place through the project;
- To track training initiatives and hours linked to the project.
What were the main benefits of using SustainIQ on this project?
SustainIQ is used on all Heron Bros projects to centrally compile sustainability performance data and then use that information to demonstrate compliance with BREEAM requirements, assist with Considerate Constructor’s Scheme site visits and allow the site team to keep track of their sustainability performance in real time. For the Danderhall project in particular, it provided the following benefits::
- Tracking engagement with local schools and communities was key to the project delivery;
- Recording data to demonstrate compliance with BREEAM Excellence requirements;
- Reporting on scopes 1, 2 and 3 (transport) emissions to the client.
Some key sustainability performance statistics from the project
98% of construction stage waste was diverted from landfill on this project, along with two biodiversity initiatives delivered on site.
67 subcontractor work packages let to Scottish contractors, with almost 50% of suppliers and products located in Scotland.
1,793 students reached through 11 school engagements and a further 10 community initiatives delivered.
940 apprenticeship weeks for eight apprentices – 75% of them Foundation Level.
“Danderhall added to our already strong portfolio of delivering landmark education infrastructure in Scotland. It’s important to us to have a positive impact on the local community by providing job opportunities and engaging with schools and community initiatives wherever we have a live project. Using SustainIQ on this project enabled us to clearly demonstrate this investment to our clients, as well as providing credible, real-time evidence of our wider sustainability credentials and positive impact.”
